Backlinks are king when it comes to getting ranked in search engines.

If a search engine is crawling a site it also visits the links that are on that site, (for most search engines, some search engines will not follow if teh link has a nofollow tag on it) and that will give your site more relavancy for your keyword, if the keyword is anchored.
